New Trier Could Name Facilities After Donors

Proposed policy would allow New Trier Township High School District 203 school board to consider naming rights for people who donate more than half the cost of a major project

Want to get something named after you at New Trier High School? It’s not going to happen, unless you’re a staff member who gave extraordinary service to the school and retired at least five years ago. But that could change, under a proposed policy that the New Trier Township High School District 203 school board discussed at their May 21 school board meeting at the school’s Northfield Campus. The school also has a campus in Winnetka. The proposed policy, which covers donations and advertising on school property, starts with a statement of philosophy that makes clear that the district does not want any advertising or donations to impact what students are taught: “The intent of the district is to minimize the impact of commercialism on …

I wouldn't call the proposed policy "trashy", but I do have concerns about it. I, too, am an alum, and my children have all attended NT (one is still there). I think it would be more appropriate to recognize donors on brick pavers, a plaque, benches, trees or even individual rooms (such as a science lab, a music performance space, etc.) rather than entire buildings. Senior Carolyn Arden won the award, which is given each year to a student who exemplifies leadership and public service.

GBS Pitcher Wins Patch's Athlete of the Week

The nominee eked out a victory and was named Athlete of the Week.

With 5 votes in the comments section, Glenbrook South's Sully Stadler was named the Athlete of the Week.  Stadler got the win for Glenbrook South in a 3-0 victory over Maine South. Stadler had eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and the victory over their CSL South rivals snapped Maine South’s 18-game winning streak. HONORABLE MENTION Reggie Murphy, freshman, track and field, Evanston - Murphy was a key contributor in helping the Wildkits win the CSL South conference track meet for the second consecutive season. Murphy was part of the winning 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams while also securing an individual title in the 100.  Charlie Dowdle, senior, boys water polo, Loyola Academy - Dowdle scored four goals, including Loyola’s final …

New Trier's Jason Dane Named Illinois Health Educator of the Year

Dane, a wellness teacher at New Trier Township High School, was honored by the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

New Trier Kinetic Wellness teacher Jason Dane has been named the 2012 Illinois Health Educator of the Year by the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The award is presented to professionals who have modeled and dedicated themselves to the importance of health education. Dane will be honored at an awards reception on Nov. 15 during the Association’s state convention in St. Charles. “This award is given in recognition of Mr. Dane’s high professional standards, his promotion of physical health and well-being, his dedication to teaching, and his service to the profession,” the Association said in announcing the award. Loyola Academy's Michelle Ricolcol Profiled on ABC 7

The senior at Loyola Academy in Wilmette was one of five seniors to lead Loyola to a Final Four berth at this years' Class 4A Illinois High School Girls Basketball Tournament. She is also the only Asian American on the team.

With 22 votes in the comments section, Shelia Grant-Shaffer won the Athlete of the Week.  Grant-Shaffer took home the shot put title at the CSL North track and field championships. Her throw of 40-3.5 was good enough to break a school record for the Giants. HONORABLE METNION Sam Koloms, junior, baseball, Glenbrook South – Koloms gave up only four hits in a 4-1 victory over Niles West in a CSL South matchup. Koloms struck out six batters, allowed no earned runs, and improved his record to 4-1 on the season. Margaret Bamgbose, senior, track and field, Evanston – Bamgbose repeated as the CSL South champion in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200-meter sprint. The Wilmette preschool won Readers' Choice "Best Preschool in New Trier Township" this week.

This week's Readers' Choice poll for best preschool was one of our most popular polls, with nearly 1,000 votes cast. The winner, with 253 votes, was St. Joseph School, 1740 Lake Ave., in Wilmette. The rankings were released as part of the Best High School rankings, now in its fourth edition according to the Huffington Post.
