Skokie Teen Charged in Shooting Near Old Orchard Mall Criminal charges have been filed against Rayshawn Taylor, 17 , of the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue in Evanston, in connection with a shooting that took place outside Old Orchard Mall near the intersection of Golf Road and Skokie Boulevard. Taylor is charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. Taylor shot a juvenile with a semiautomatic pistol on May 17 around 9:45 p.m., police said. When officers arrived at the scene, they observed a male subject lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He is currently in stable condition. Some New Trier parents are speaking out against the school's plan to require all students to have an iPad.
New Trier High School's Mobile Learning Initiative will have all students use their own iPad for school by the 2014-15 school year. While some believe this plan will eventually save money for the district in the long run, other parents think that the program is unfair for non-wealthy families, an article by Business Insider states. “We’re in a wealthy district, but you can’t assume that everyone’s wealthy,” Mary Rita Kropp, a New Trier parent, was quoted in the article. The program pays an average of $620 for the iPad, keyboard, case and applications. Families receive a $270 subsidy, and can then pay $350 for a 16GB version or $450 for a 32GB iPad. Driving Complaint Leads to Arrest On May 18, officers received a 911 call from a driver who was being followed by an SUV occupied by two men, according to police. The caller noticed the SUV's license plate number and the vehicle sped onto the Edens Expressway while the caller went to the Northfield police station, according to the report. Officers then found the vehicle and arrested Efrain Cortez, 30, of Chicago for driving without a license, excessive speeding and improper lane usage, police say. A Glencoe woman who posed as a licensed drug counselor and allegedly deposited insurance company checks into her personal bank account has pleaded guilty to the forgery charges, according to an article by the Chicago Tribune. Kimberly Even, 48, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 3. Even was arrested in Oct. of 2011 and charged with forgery after depositing $16,600 in insurance checks made out to a Fox River Grove client, the Tribune reports. In Dec. of 2010, the Illinois Department of Human Services revoked her business license and shut down her North Shore Adolescent Recovery Center in Northfield and in Feb. 2010, she was ordered to not represent herself as a certified alcohol and drug counselor, although officials say she never stopped…

Identity Theft A victim on the 1000 block of Cherry St. reported that on May 13, an unknown offender(s) accessed her bank account and attempted to withdraw funds for a wire transfer, police reports state. It seems hard to believe that there was a time when the term "school shooting" hadn't entered our vernacular. But 25 years ago, when Laurie Dann did just that at Hubbard Woods school in Winnetka — in addition to attempting to poison, burn and shoot many others in a violent rampage in the North Shore — such episodes were virtually unheard of.
