Students in fifth and sixth grade attend The Skokie School before progressing to Carleton Washburne School on District 36's middle school campus. The Skokie School opened in 1922 to serve middle school students. As the school district changed in size, the school accomodated different grade levels of students. Since the 1998-99 school year, fifth and sixth graders have attended The Skokie School. Students at The Skokie School have the opportunity to study Spanish and participate in dance, drama, music, computers and community service. Fifth graders participate in Extravaganza, a perfomance that features the students as artists, musicians and dancers.
