Robert Smith Named As New Executive Director

On January 16, 2014, the Winnetka Park District Board of Commissioners appointed Robert Smith as the new Executive Director for the Winnetka Park District. He has been with the Park District since 2003 as Superintendent of Parks. His in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the Park District’s operations will enable him to hit the ground running.

During his tenure with the Park District, Robert has successfully demonstrated his leadership abilities through staff development, project management, public outreach and engagement and budget preparation, along with operational management of the District’s park assets.

Prior to his stint with the Winnetka Park District, Robert served as the Superintendent of Parks for the Park District of Franklin Park (2000-2003) and Morton Grove Park District (1990-2000).  His parks and recreation career has spanned over 34 years, getting his start at the Bensenville Park District as a Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.

Robert has both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Public Administration from Governors State University and an Associates Degree in Horticulture from Harper Community College. Additionally he is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional and Certified Playground Inspector.  Along with regular attendance at the Illinois Parks And Recreation Conference, he has continued to stay current with parks and recreation trends through completion of the Illinois Park And Recreation Association Professional Development School and the National Recreation and Park Association Facility Management and Directors Schools.

The Executive Search firm of Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates led the Park Board through the search process.  The board developed a list of desired characteristics, experience, and competencies. “It became evident that internal candidate, Robert Smith met and even exceeded the criteria”, said Board President, Brad McLane. “The Board’s selection for the Executive Director position demonstrates the depth of the agency’s executive talent, and the quality of the professionals serving the Park District.”
