Parks

The Winnetka Park District is a unit of local government, duly organized on September 22, 1903, under an act of the General Assembly of the State of Illinois. The Winnetka Park District covers 4.8 square miles, and includes the Village of Winnetka and portions of the Village of Glencoe and the Village of Northfield, as well as some unincorporated areas. The Park District's population is approximately 14,500.

The Winnetka Park District Board meetings are held twice monthly on Thursdays. Committee meetings are typically held the 2nd Tuesday of the month and Board meetings are held the 4th Thursday of the month. These public meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Winnetka Park District Administrative Office, 540 Hibbard Road.

Library

The Winnetka Public Library was established in 1884 to serve the intellectual, cultural, and recreational needs of the community. The library converted from a village department to a separate governmental unit in 1974 in order to include Northfield in its tax supported service area. While Kenilworth is not part of the Library District, its residents have been served through a contractual agreement since 1984.

The Winnetka-Northfield Board of Trustees meets the third Monday of every month. The public is invited to come to the meetings, which are at 7:00. Meetings are held in the Lloyd Room at the Winnetka Public Library except April, August & November, when the meetings are held at the Northfield Branch.

District 36 School Board

The first public school in Winnetka was opened on October 1, 1859 on the corner of Maple and Elm Streets. Known as District #2 School, the one-room structure sat on the present-day Village Green and held 25 students. It was forced to move ten years later when, in 1869, Charles Peck donated the Village Green to Winnetka for park purposes and stipulated that no structures ever be built on the land. The same year, Winnetka was incorporated as a village with a population of 450. The Winnetka Public Schools District 36 is proud to celebrate 150 years of public education in our community.

The Winnetka Public Schools Distrct 36 monthly board meetings are held in the Carleton Washburne School Resource Center and generally take place at 7:15 P.M. the fourth Tuesday of each month. The community is welcome at all meetings and there are two opportunities for public comment during every session.

Village Council

In 1836 Erastus Patterson, his wife Zeruah, and their five children joined a caravan of covered wagons from Vermont heading west. Stopping for the night on the wooded hill that is today called Lloyd Park, the Pattersons were enchanted with the area and decided to settle. They built a tavern, referred to today as the Patterson Tavern, for travelers along the Green Bay Trail from Fort Dearborn, Chicago to Fort Howard, Wisconsin.

All meetings of the Winnetka Village Council are held in compliance with the requirements of the Open Meetings Act, which includes giving proper notice, posting agendas, maintaining accurate minutes and making all final decisions in public. Unless otherwise posted, all meetings of the Village Council are held at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of Village Hall, 510 Green Bay Road.
