On The Edge

Youth Wrestling Returns to North Shore

The North Shore Edge Wrestling Club returns this winter ready to hit the mats. Several changes were made in the club’s first year by opening its doors to all the townships in the northern suburbs of Chicago and adding Northwestern University’s Jack Griffin as one of the coaches.  These modifications significantly increased club membership from 37 to 93 wrestlers, making Edge the second largest youth wrestling club in the North Chicago Section.

Head Coach Marc Tadelman is excited about the progress the club has made so far, but still believes Edge can cut through new heights to provide a program for all youth to build their self-confidence and competitive spirit. To provide more individualized attention, Tadelman has hired Mike Buhr, an NCAA qualifier and a graduate from Cornell College.

“The kids will learn first hand from two great wrestlers Griffin and Buhr what it takes to be successful both on and off the mat,” said Tadelman.

For Tadelman and his coaching staff, the main emphasis for youth wrestlers is to develop their athletic skills and strengthen mental attitude to help kids not only be successful in wrestling, but successful in life.

“I believe the benefits of wrestling are immense, but the most important is giving kids the confidence that they can succeed on their own,” said Tadelman.  “In wrestling it is you versus an opponent, there is no teammate to help you out or blame if mistakes are made.  All your accomplishments and failures are your own.”

Tadelman believes wrestling teaches lessons that can be translated into other aspects of life once a wrestler’s career is over.  To raise awareness, Tadelman points to two articles in the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. WSJ published an article about the benefits of wrestling that the kids learn the virtues of discipline, hard work, and accountability; Forbes ran an article on why wrestlers make the best employees.  “I think these articles can relate to people in our community and would spark a lot of interest in wrestling,” said Tadelman.
