Temple Jeremiah to hold Special Needs Worship on Rosh HaShanah

Temple Jeremiah, a Reform synagogue in Northfield, Ill., will be offering its first-ever Special Needs Worship service on Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish new year.

"We worked very hard to remove all physical barriers at Temple Jeremiah that would prevent participation of those people who have physical disabilities,” said Rabbi Paul Cohen, senior rabbi at Temple Jeremiah. “This new worship experience is part of our effort to remove the types of barriers that we do not ‘see’ but that have kept many people with disabilities and their families out of our sanctuary.”

Cantor Amy Zussman said she hopes the service will appeal to people of all ages with special needs, along with their friends and family. The service is free and open to the community at large.

“Our High Holy Day services are so well-attended that we felt that it would be more comfortable and inviting to have those people with special needs worship in a more intimate setting,” Cantor Zussman said. “And we’ll be encouraging the congregants to sing along, to clap, to dance – however they want to express themselves.”

The service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. For more information, watch the temple’s YouTube video, or contact Cantor Amy Zussman at 847.441.5760 or amy@templejeremiah.org.
