Your New Trier Summer Construction Guide

Want to know what streets to avoid? We've got a map and list of roadwork projects underway in the area this summer.

Remember the old axiom: "There are two seasons in Chicago, winter and construction"? This remains true in 2012 in New Trier Township.

Many area roads will be going under the proverbial knife this summer causing inconvenience for local drivers. Several communities already have projects underway on area arteries. There is going to be some navigation needed, but the scope and depth of the work does not reach the gigantic proportions of years gone by.

The interactive map above has the different projects plotted on it. And you can also always check the latest traffic maps here when you're heading out of the house.

Here’s a look at the summer construction season near you:

The most prominent work being done this year is between Beach and Lake Cook roads that has already begun. The first of the two anticipated detours is already in place, with southbound traffic shifted over to nearby Green Bay Road, while the northbound lane remains open. This project started in the last week of May and is scheduled to continue through mid-August.

This $3.4-million project is being paid for from a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency that the village is anticipating paying back over 20 years.

In addition, maintenance resurfacing is scheduled to take place on nine streets throughout the village. This includes portions of: Old Green Bay Road, Cedar Lane, Greenwood Avenue, Vernon Avenue, South Avenue, Randolph Street, Scott Avenue and the Water Plant and Beach Access road. (See map above for more details.)

Finally, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is continuing to construct a new driveway at the Children’s Learning Center at the Chicago Botanic Gardens' main entrance at 1000 Lake Cook Road. The state agency says it should be finished later this year.

Winnetka

The area surrounding Nick Corwin Park will have some street closures particularly near the intersection of Pine Tree Lane and Asbury Avenue, and onto Asbury Court.

Other areas such as Randolph Street from Asbury Avenue to the north village limits, Hackberry Lane from West End to Hibbard Road and Hibbard Road from Tower Road to Pine Street will be resurfaced, but not closed.

Village residents seeking more specific information are encouraged to call the Public Works Department at 847/716-3568.

Kenilworth

This is where the Cook County Highway Department is focusing its energies in the area this year.

One underpass under Green Bay Road between Roger and Wayland has been closed for about a month. The head of the highway department hopes to get the work done by the beginning of September.

Some other areas to look out for includes Warwick Road from Kenilworth Avenue to Cumberland Road, Sterling Road from Park Drive to Roger Avenue, Roger Avenue from Green Bay Road to Exmore Road and Maclean Avenue from Ridge Road to Brier Street.

All of these projects are intended to be completed by the end of July.

Wilmette

Four relatively small sections of streets in Wilmette on 12th Street, Elmwood Avenue, Park Avenue and Iroquois Road have been undergoing resurfacing work which is expected to be wrapped up this week. (See map above for more details.)

Northfield

No projects have been scheduled as of this time.

IDOT has scheduled some bridge painting in Northfield, but that is not expected to have a major impact on traffic.
