Firecracker Run This Saturday at Village Green

Early registration deadline is Wednesday for the 5K event; awards will be given out in 16 different categories.

The Winnetka Park District Firecracker 5K Run will be held Saturday, June 30, at beginning at 8 a.m.

The event, which has continued as a community tradition for the last 10 years, is an opportunity for residents and neighbors to promote a healthy lifestyle while spending time with family and friends.

“It’s a great event, most of the runners are community members, neighbors, friends and their extended families.  A lot of parents run it with their children, and it reflects the healthy attitude of our community,” said Ed Bjes, recreation supervisor.

Athletico will be on the scene to help participants do pre and post stretching to avoid injuries, Bjes said.

In years past, the ages of participants have ranged from seven to 70 years, according to Bjes.

Awards will be given in different categories, separately for males and females.  They will include ten years and under, 11-14 and 15-20 years of age.

Additional divisions will encompass 21-30 year-olds, those 31-40, 41-50 and so on to include runners of all ages.  Recognition for the least experienced and most experienced runners also will be made.

Bjes said 220 people participated in last year’s event, and he expects the same number or more will join in this year.

For those not interested in running, a free walk or run will begin at 8:15 a.m.

The cost for early registration is $20. People can still sign up until the morning of the race for $25. Late registrants are encouraged to arrive by 7:15 a.m. to participate.
