Trevians Win Two In A Row With Victory Over Maine East

New Trier earned its second straight victory with a dominant 41-0 win over Maine East, continuing growth under first-year coach Dan Starkey.

First year New Trier football coach Dan Starkey expected some ups and downs as he got acquainted with his team and school.

After three games, up and down is what he has gotten, with two wins sandwiching a loss in the early part of the 2010 season. But the Trevians seem to have straightened themselves out Thursday with a dominant 41-0 victory over Maine East.

The Trevians edged Warren 10-7 in a surprising defensive battle to start the season, lost to Chicago St. Patrick in a poor second game showing 28-14, then manhandled previously unbeaten Glenbrook North 33-14 in the third game of the season.

Starkey, who moved to New Trier from Glenbard South, said the results were equal to his expectations considering the makeup of his roster.

"Our senior class is a smaller class than usual, with about 30 seniors on a roster of about 70,'' Starkey said. "We are not the most talented team, but we feel we have good chemistry and leadership."

Starkey said he was impressed with his club's play in the first game of the season.

"You never know what to expect in your first game at a new school, with new players together for a short time, and the coaches together for a short time,'' Starkey said. "I thought we had great teamwork amongst the coaching staff and players."

The Trevians won that game thanks to some assistance from Warren. Trailing 7-3 with two minutes left in the game, the Trevians got the ball at Warren's 40-yard line after a punt, then accepted a pair of 15-yard penalties against the opposition to set up the scoring opportunity. They scored on a pass from Benji Cohen to Charlie Tilson with about 20 seconds left to record the win.

Against a very talented St. Patrick team, the Trevians took the early 7-0 and had a chance to go ahead by two scores but turned the ball over on downs in the red zone. Later, with the score tied 7-7, Tilson had a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown called back because of a block in the back.

St. Patrick led 14-7 at halftime and got another pair of scores quickly in the second half.

"We were not disappointed in our effort, but we didn't execute as well as we need to, and we didn't tackle the way we needed to,'' Starkey said. "But St. Patrick looks like a very good team."

The Glenbrook North game was peculiar, because Glenbrook North led 14-6 at one point. But the Trevians took advantage of quick turnovers in the second half and scored several times to create the huge difference.

"We found out after the game that we held them to seven offensive plays in the second half,'' Starkey said. "That's almost unheard of."

Tilson scored one of the Trevian touchdowns on a 32-yard end-around play that gave New Trier a 20-14 lead.

Senior quarterback Connor DeLoach had a pair of touchdown passes in the game, one to senior Scott Schoder and the other to Tilson. DeLoach finished with six completions in 11 attempts.

The win over Maine East gave New Trier its second decision over a Central Suburban League North Division opponent this season. New Trier competes in the CSL South Division.

Starkey moved to New Trier after six years at Glenbard South, where he compiled a record of 37-26 and four playoff appearances. His last two Raiders teams went 9-3.
