Trevian Girls Roundup: Sectional Final Versus Loyola Looms for Soccer Team

Lacrosse's season ended with a loss to Loyola while softball began its postseason with a victory.

Soccer: The transition into spring hasn’t meant consistent good weather this year, but it always bring the entertainment of the Loyola Academy – New Trier rivalry. For the fourth time this season – both water polo teams and girls lacrosse were the other three -- the two athletic programs will match up in a sectional final. The IHSA Class 3A Sectional final will be held at Evanston on Friday night.

New Trier won another regional championship with a 3-1 victory over Niles West on May 20 and followed it up with a 2-1 win against Maine South on May 24. Lauren Shellenback scored the game-winner with seven minutes remaining to set up the Trevians’ fourth playoff game in the last five years against Loyola.

Loyola is undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the state by the Chicago Tribune, but the Trevians have history on their side. New Trier upended Loyola, 1-0, in last year’s sectional final match, but lost to Glenbrook South in the Super-Sectional.

Softball: New Trier (19-11) started off its postseason run with a dominating 13-0 victory over Lincoln Park in the regional semifinals. Brigit Ieuter earned the win on the mound and both Eileen Hurley and Chelsea Delaney had a double and two runs scored for New Trier. The Trevians play Loyola Academy or host Resurrection in the regional final on Saturday morning.

After winning the CSL South, New Trier used the end of its season to play some tough competition and prepare for the playoffs. The Trevians lost, 5-0, to Sandburg, the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Lockport Sectional, and recently split a double-header with Downers Grove North, who is ranked No. 4 in the state. Ryan Lee got the win in Game 2 for New Trier and Breanna Berceau had a double and an RBI.

Lacrosse: It wasn’t officially for the state championship, but both Loyola and New Trier knew the winner would have the inside track to a state title. Both state finalists for the past three seasons, Loyola and New Trier’s matchup again came down to only a couple of goals. And again Loyola came out on top, beating New Trier, 16-14, in the IHSWLA Evanston Sectional final.

Janie Gion and Kelsey Murray each have five goals for the Trevians.

Three players from New Trier’s senior class will be continuing their lacrosse careers in college.

Track and Field: Sophomore Jessica Ackerman finished second in the 3200(10:47.58), just .26 seconds behind the winner, and eighth in the 1600 (5:08.13) to earn all-state honors in both events. The 4x800 relay team of Sam Wade, Ellie Pearlman, Julie Jackson and Anna Berglund also earned all-state merit by finishing in ninth place (9:25.35).
