Trevian Girls Roundup: Maggie Lyon Commits to Northwestern

The fall season starts with big expectations for the tennis and golf teams.

BAKSETBALL: Amy Jaeschke paved the way for a New Trier–Northwestern University (NWU) basketball pipeline five years ago and now another Trevian is following in her footsteps.

Senior guard Maggie Lyon gave an oral commitment to the Wildcats last week, choosing the local Big Ten school over numerous schools, including Michigan, Iowa, Purdue and DePaul universities.

Lyon did it all for New Trier last season, averaging 20.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals a game. While she played a number of positions on the floor for New Trier, Lyon will most likely be put at shooting guard position when she makes the transition to the college game. The off-guard spot is also the position she plays for her club basketball team.

Lyon will once again be looked to as the leader for the Trevians in her senior season. New Trier finished 17-13 last year, losing in the regional final to , and Niles West. The two future college players will have at least two more matchups this season in Central Suburban League (CSL) South.

TENNIS: The Chicago Sun-Times ranked New Trier third in its tennis season preview. The Trevians return five of the six players who competed in the state championships last season. New Trier took third place, finishing behind Lake Forest (40) and Hinsdale Central (36).

Carol Finke looks to be the Trevians’ top singles players. As a freshman last year, Finke went 5-2 in the state championships, earning 7 points for New Trier. She lost in the third round, but advanced all the way to the seventh round of the consolation bracket before she fell or the second time.

Sophomore Julia Schroeder and senior Rebecca Ritchie returned for the Trevians. The two played doubles at the state tournament last year, finishing in sixth place.

GOLF: When things are going well for New Trier golfer Elizabeth Szokol, they tend to keep coming. The NWU-bound senior had back-to-back eagles on the seventh and eighth holes at the Glenview Park District Golf Course as part of her 3-under-par 32 in a CSL matchup against Glenbrook South.

Behind Szokol’s metalist performance, New Trier easily defeated their CSL South rivals, 145-188. Ellie McGuire (35), Callie Nelson (38) and Nerissa Dennenberg (40) rounded out New Trier’s top four scorers.

Nelson took medalist honors in New Trier’s 149-159 victory against Prospect on Wednesday, shooting a 1-under-par 34.

FIELD HOCKEY: Junior Katy Weeks scored with just 3 minutes remaining in the game to give New Trier (4-0) a 1-0 victory on August 30 against Loyola.
