Trevian Girls Roundup: Georgiadis Wins Badminton State Championship

Girls soccer started its playoff run with a win while water polo lost in the sectional final.

Water Polo: When on Saturday, the emotions of its season coming to an end were evident.

“At the end a lot of people saw us crying and I think they thought we were crying because we lost. But it was really because this was an incredible team,” junior Erika Nothnagel said. “We were so connected with these seniors. It was a big emotional thing because it was our last game with them.”

The Trevians couldn’t quite rally from a big first-half deficit as Loyola’s defense was too strong.

“On offense we took chances and told them to go for steals in the second half, but were still unable to do that for the most part,” coach Matt Wendt said.

Many of New Trier’s returning players, including Nothnagel, will swim for the Trevians in the fall and come back to play water polo in the spring.

New Trier beat Evanston, 9-8, and Glenbrook South, 14-5, to advance to the championship match against Loyola.

Badminton: Mari Georgiadis had some pretty big shoes to fill after 2010 badminton state champion Allison Doren graduated last spring. But the Harvard-bound senior wrote her own name into the record books, capping an undefeated season with a state championship.

Georgiadis took down T.F. South’s Loran Pasko 21-15, 21-5 in the championship match last weekend.

As the other singles entry, Audrey Mang went 2-2, ending her tournament in the third round of the consolation bracket.

Claire Hindsley and Vicki Ho combined to go 2-2, falling in the fourth round of the consolation bracket while the other doubles team of Nikki VanderPal and Christina Zibart had a record of 1-2 at the state tournament.

As a team, New Trier finished in third place after winning the team title last season.

Lacrosse: New Trier has continued to roll on after its lone in-state loss to Loyola. The Trevians destroyed Barrington, 19-4, on May 12. If New Trier keeps winning, the Trevians will have their rematch with Loyola in the sectional final on Monday.

Kelsey Murray broke New Trier’s all-time single-season assist mark on Friday in New Trier’s 18-4 victory against Lake Forest. The sophomore attacker had six assists to give her 65 on the season. Molly Quirke was the previous record holder.

Murray now has 126 points for the year and will break the single-season mark with two more points Ginny Gummersall set the previous record with 127.

Soccer: New Trier started its postseason run with a dominating 8-0 win against Prosser at home in the semi-finals of the IHSA Class 3A Winnetka Regional.

New Trier, the No. 2 seed in the Evanston Sectional behind Loyola Academy, will play Niles West on Friday for the regional championship. The Trevians beat Niles West, 4-0, at the beginning of the season in early March and are now ranked No. 7 by the Chicago Tribune.
