Trevian Girls Roundup: Badminton Marches On To State Finals

Lacrosse suffers its first in-state defeat while soccer readies for the postseason.

Badminton: After winning a state championship and graduating a number of talented seniors, many expected a drop-off from New Trier this season. But so far, the Trevians are proving that they are title contenders once again.

New Trier last weekend and advanced both of its singles players and doubles teams in Thursday’s sectional.

Mari Georgiadis cruised to individual titles in both events, but New Trier coach Deborah Ofcky singled out Audrey Mang as a player who has progressed above and beyond expectations.

“Audrey did an awesome job,” Ofcky said of Mang after she won the No. 2 singles at the CSL Championships. “Early on in the year as a sophomore, she lost a couple matches to a couple of these schools so that’s something we’re really proud of her for being able to improve from day one to now,”

Lacrosse: New Trier knows the road to a state championship always goes through Loyola. And after Wednesday’s , the Trevians know they are right on track.

“You don’t have to circle this game or say anything,” New Trier coach Peter Collins said after Wednesday’s game. “This is a great rivalry and to have this tradition is awesome. This is not the game we want to win, this is not the playoffs.”

New Trier fell behind 9-5 at the half, but rallied to tie the game at 11-11. Loyola scored the game-winner off a Trevian turnover with just more than a minute remaining.

Softball: The Trevians received the No. 1 seed in the IHSA Class 4A Winnetka Sectional on Thursday and their recent play is proving they deserve it. New Trier has won five games in the past seven days.

Their offense has come alive, scoring 68 runs in the five games, including 21 against Maine South on May 2. Chelsea Delaney was 4-for-5 with a double and three home runs, including a grand slam in New Trier’s 21-10 six-inning victory over the Hawks.

The Trevians swept a double-header from Oak Park on April 30 and beat Loyola in a non-conference matchup, 10-7, on May 3. Molly Morrison was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the victory.

Track: At their own invitational last weekend, New Trier garnered 35 points as a team to finish in eighth place. New Trier was paced by Jessica Ackerman who won the 1600 in 5:08.11. The Trevians’ 4x800 relay also took first place in a time of 10:04.66.

Although Courtney Ackerman did not compete because of a sore quadriceps, New Trier’s middle distance competitors picked up the slack. In the 800, Julie Jackson (2:23.50) and Ellie Pearlman (2:32.03) finished  third and fifth respectively.
