Trevian Boys Roundup: Volleyball Proves Itself as a State Title Contender

Baseball sweeps a weekend double-header and tennis continues to dominate all challengers.

Volleyball: Midway through the season, New Trier looks to be right on track to contend for a state championship. The Trevians took third place at the Mustang Invitational Tournament at Downers Grove South by winning four of their five matches.

New Trier won each of its first matches in two games, defeating Hinsdale South, Stagg and Barrington in pool play. In the semifinals, the Trevians lost a hard-fought match to host Downers Grove South 25-19, 25-22. But New Trier rallied to beat Lake Park 25-19, 25-19 for third place on Saturday.

In the latest boys volleyball rankings by the Sun-Times, New Trier is ranked No. 6 in the state.

Before the Downers Grove South tournament, New Trier's boys team took care of business against Lake Forest and Waukegan. Bennett Wakenight had six kills and Danny Ullman contributed 10 digs in New Trier’s 25-8, 25-17 win against Waukegan.

Tennis: The defending state champions continue to prove that they are the team to beat going into the postseason with another team title at the Hinsdale Central Invitational.

Last year’s state singles champion Robert Stineman won the singles title and New Trier topped an eight-team field that included Hinsdale Central, Oak Park and Deerfield.  Stineman defeated teammate Jared Hiltzik in the championship.

Baseball: The Trevians swept two games on Saturday to improve their record to 9-4 on the season.

Eric West hit a three-run homer and scored three times in New Trier’s 15-6 victory over Barrington. Ken Gerner (2-for-3 with 3 RBIs) and Eddie Fay (2-for-5 with 2 RBIs) paced the offense in an 11-4 win against Jones.

Water Polo: New Trier (14-8) finished at 2-2 in the Titan Tournament hosted by Glenbrook South last weekend. The Trevians defeated Prospect 18-3 in their opening game before they lost the next two to Libertyville and Naperville North. Libertyville scored the final three goals of the game to eke out a 9-8 victory over the Trevians. New Trier rebounded to defeat Evanston 11-8 in its final game on Saturday.

Although the Trevians’ performance at the tournament wasn’t up to par, their overall performance throughout the regular season earned them the No. 1 seed in the Illinois High School Association's Northbrook Sectional. The Trevians are slated to meet either Maine West or Niles West in their first-round matchup on May 12.
