Trevian Boys Roundup: Golf Advances Toward State Championship

Football halts its losing streak, and soccer prepares for the postseason.

Golf: has made it look easy in its quest for the school’s first state championship since 2003. After winning the Notre Dame Regional a week ago, the Trevians cruised to a 14-shot victory at the Class 3A Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional on Monday.

Senior Matt Forloine took home medalist honors after shooting a 73 at Balmoral Woods Country Club in Crete. Junior Ian Wright took second place with a 74. Seniors Fitz Bowen and Dana Hayes shot 77s to also score for New Trier.

The Trevians (301) beat out runner-up Loyola Academy (315) and third-place Oak Park – River Forest (327), who both also advanced as teams to the state championships.

Bowen shot 74 to win medalist honors at the regional championships.

The state championships will be held on Friday and Saturday at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

Soccer: New Trier fell to Deerfield 1-0 in its CSL crossover match. Eric Gilbert scored the goal and Josh Norris had five saves for the Warriors on Oct. 4.

New Trier earned the No. 10 seed in the Class 3A Evanston Sectional. The Trevians will face No. 6 Glenbrook North at home in the regional semifinals on Oct. 18 before a potential matchup with No. 3 Maine West in the regional finals. The Warriors defeated the Trevians 4-3 in last year’s regional final on their way to a sectional championship appearance.

CSL South rival Evanston is the top seed in the sectional while Leyden is the No. 2-ranked team. Complete brackets can be found here.

Basketball: Basketball season doesn’t start for another month, but New Trier is already doing work off the court.

The varsity team joined the Triship Club to help raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund by walking the three-mile course at Independence Grove in Libertyville last Sunday. The Trevians raised $950 as a team.

Football: New Trier righted the ship after a two-game losing streak . After struggling on offense in the first half, quarterback Jack Nykaza was efficient, passing for two touchdowns and running for another.

The Trevian defense had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and Niles West scored its only touchdown on a kickoff return near the end of the first half. New Trier held Niles West to only one first down in the first half.
