North Shore Golf: Young Team Pursues State Playoff Berth

North Shore assistant coach Jay Bach fondly remembers his trip to the state championship last year. He, along with head coach Joe Bosco, went to help and watch then-sophomore Nick McCall compete against Illinois’ best high school golfers.

Bach wants to go back this year, and he wants to bring the entire team--not just to watch, but to compete.

“That’s one of our goals is to get downstate as a team,” Bach said. “If kids can step up in the regional and sectional, that’s basically what they have to do.”

McCall has gone to state over the past two years, and is poised to do so again as a junior. After a summer of playing junior golf, McCall looks to be on his game early in the season. He was the medalist in North Shore’s last two matches, firing a 2-under-par 33 for nine holes at Willow Hill against Immaculate Conception and a 37 at Merit Club vs. Niles North.

But the rest of North Shore’s golfers are also stepping up. Behind McCall has been juniors Andrew Bedford and Andrew Blechman along with sophomore Will Skinner and freshman David Bedford.

With only one senior--Ben Goren--in North Shore’s top six, it looks like Bach could be making those hotel reservations over the next couple years.

“We’ve got three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman,” Bach said. “It shows great promise for the future.”
