New Trier's Top 10 Sports Moments of 2010-2011

Boys lacrosse won its seventh straight championship while swimming teams were dominant at the state championships.

Here are Patch's top 10 sports moments for New Trier during the past school year.

10. Basketball Teams Sweep Evanston at Northwestern: While both Trevian teams were bounced early in the playoffs, they each won the second of their two annual meetings with CSL South rival Evanston. The boys were led by while the with a decisive victory.

9. : Down to its last six outs, New Trier scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, 2-2, on a bases-loaded single by Eileen Hurley. Brigit Ieuter held Lake Zurich scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings and Molly Morrison delivered an RBI double to score Chelsea Delaney for the winning run.

8. Charlie Tilson Drafted by St. Louis Cardinals: still isn’t sure if he’ll skip college and sign with St. Louis, but hearing his name called as the 79th pick was still exciting for the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year.

7. Field Hockey Beats No. 1 Lake Forest for Back-To-Back Championships: Avenging an earlier 3-1 loss to Lake Forest, New Trier outplayed the Scouts on turf to win its second straight state title. Ginny Pera and Emma Mitchell scored New Trier’s goals, both coming in the second half.

6. Girls Golf Edges Homewood-Flossmoor for State Title: After losing to Homewood-Flossmoor by 41 strokes in 2009, New Trier surprised last year’s state champs by shooting 627 as a team, three strokes better than Homewood-Flossmoor. Junior Elizabeth Szokol led the Trevians, placing fifth with a 149 (74-75),

5. Swimming Teams Dominate at State: by any team since 1985, getting victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The girls team ended Rosary’s four-year streak of state championships  and beat runner-up Loyola Academy by more than 70 points.

4. Boys Lacrosse Wins Seventh Straight State Title: A regular-season loss to Loyola Academy had New Trier as the No. 2 seed in the IHSLA playoffs and a lot of people were picking the Ramblers to end the Treivans’ streak. in the second half and Jack Connelly was phenomenal in goal as the Trevians dominated Loyola for a 9-2 win.

3. King, Later Place in 1600 at State: Senior Tommy King and junior Leland Later both set personal bests, taking third and fourth in the mile at this spring’s state championships. King ran the four laps in 4 minutes, 14.08 seconds while Later finished right behind in 4:14.30.

2. Robert Stineman Completes Back-To-Back State Titles: All season Robert Stineman had focused on forgetting his win in 2010. Now, the Stanford-bound tennis star can look back fondly at both. Stineman didn’t lose a match during the 2011 season and also helped New Trier to a state championship.

1. Mari Georgiadis Finishes Badminton Season Undefeated: Georgiadis saw three seniors come away with state championships last year, but 2011 was her season for dominance. New Trier’s No. 1 singles player didn’t lose a game all season, cruising to conference and state championships.
