New Trier Crew Wins 15 Medals At Rowing Championship

The students won medals in 15 of the 16 events they entered.

New Trier High School crews dominated the Greater Chicago Juniors Rowing Championship on Saturday, May 7, winning medals in 15 of the 16 events they entered.

Leading the way were New Trier’s men’s and women’s first varsity eights, both of which won their events. The men’s and women’s second varsity eights each finished second, beating other teams’ top varsity boats.

The event was hosted by the Crystal Lake Rowing Club and drew nine crews from the Chicago area, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Compared to past years, when strong winds and whitecaps made rowing difficult, conditions were generally good.

“It’s great to see all the hard work translate into fast times on the water for our boys and girls crews,” said Rose Marchuk, New Trier’s head coach.

WOMEN’S TEAM

Besides the first varsity eight, first-place finishers for the women included the lightweight eight, novice four, novice eight, lightweight four and junior varsity eight.

Second-place finishers were the novice four and varsity four. The novice four took third place.

“The varsity and novice crews have demonstrated their perennial strength by winning their races by a commanding margin,” said Marchuk, the women’s team coach. “The crew to watch this year is the lightweight girls; they won their 8’s and 4’s races and are on track to have a very fast season.”

MEN’S TEAM

In addition to the varsity eight, New Trier’s first novice men's eight won gold.

Winning silver were the second varsity eight, the lightweight eight, the junior varsity eight and the lightweight four.

Bronze medals went to the lightweight eight, varsity four, and novice four.

Speaking of the first place finish by the varsity eight, men's coach Nate Kelp-Lenane said:  "I was happy to see this lineup take first five seconds in front of our second boat. This crew is looking forward to getting more races under their belts for Midwest Championships.”

New Trier’s next regatta is the Midwest Scholastic Championship Regatta, which will be held on May 20th and 21st in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The regatta was originally scheduled for May 14-15 for Cincinnati, Ohio, but was moved because of severe flooding at the race site.

The Midwest championships serve as the qualifying regatta for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship Regatta, to be held May 28 and 28 in Camden, N.J.
