HS Playoffs Roundup: Loyola Football, New Trier Swimming Continue As State Favorites

Loyola's football team moved on to the quarterfinals with a shutout win and New Trier's swimming team dominated its conference championships.

Football: Loyola’s defense recorded its second straight shutout in the playoffs as at Gately Stadium.

The Ramblers (11-0) advanced to the quarterfinals where they will take on Lyons Township at home on Saturday night.

Peter Pujals had a big receiving day, catching nine passes for 181 yards and a touchdown. Will Palivos ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

(9-2) saw its best season in more than a decade come to an end with a 53-15 loss to Forreston in the second round. The Raiders won their first playoff game since 1999 in the first round. 

Six New Trier senior football players were named to the CSL South all-conference team. OL Casey Karnes, OL Campbell Lipe, QB Jack Nykaza, DL Nick Hedge, LB Sam Scherer and LB Jack O’Malley all earned the honor.

Girls Volleyball: Glenbrook South upended Loyola in the sectional championship 25-19, 25-12 to end the Ramblers’ season.

Middle hitter Kaitlin Mohr led Loyola with eight kills.

No. 4 Loyola upset No. 1 in the sectional semifinals 25-22, 25-20 to set up the championship game against Glenbrook South.

Girls Swimming: New Trier won eight events at the CSL South championships at Glenbrook South on Saturday, swimming its way to yet another conference championship.

The Trevians compiled 501 team points, easily beating out runner-up Glenbrook South (291) and third-place Evanston (259).

Junior Stephanie Marchuk was the Trevians’ only swimmer to win two individual events, taking the title in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.47) and 200 free (1:53.34). Senior Samantha James won the 100 butterfly (56.95), sophomore Kara Lucenti took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.66), Olivia Loucks won the diving competition (436.95 points), and junior Riley Hayward captured first place in the 200 individual medley (2:10.03).

The Trevians also won the 200 free and 400 free relays.

New Trier will compete in the sectional championships back at Glenbrook South on Saturday.

Boys Cross Country: New Trier’s Leland Later won the Class 3A state championship, completing the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds. Loyola’s Todd Ford finished in sixth place at 14:32.

New Trier didn’t run its best race of the season, finishing 11th with 329 points in the team standings. Loyola (387) finished even with Wheaton North in points, but lost the fifth-runner tiebreaker to take 18th place overall.

Loyola senior Will Hague (14:49) took 17th and New Trier senior Chip Schaff (15:15) was 47th.

Girls Cross Country:  With three runners in the top 11, New Trier easily captured the Class 3A team championship on Saturday in Peoria.

Junior Courtney Ackerman (16:50) took fourth, freshman Mimi Smith (17:08) took 10th and junior Jessica Ackerman (17:11) finished in 11th as New Trier accumulated 82 team points, outdistancing runner-up Wheaton Warrenville South (144).

Boys Soccer: Four New Trier soccer players were named to the CSL South all-conference squad. Sophomore forward Jeff Farina, sophomore forward Alex Underwood, senior forward Andrew Cahill and junior defenseman Conor Willsey earned the honor for their play during the 2011 season.

New Trier advanced all the way to the Super-Sectional before losing to Fremd.
