High School Playoffs Roundup: New Trier and Loyola Dominate Fall Season

New Trier's field hockey won the state title while Loyola football won its first-round playoff game.

Field Hockey: New Trier won its third consecutive Illinois High School Field Hockey Association state title with a 2-0 win against Lake Forest on Saturday. Senior Erin Petry and junior Katy Weeks scored for the Trevians, who split two regular-season meetings with Lake Forest earlier in the season.

finished the season with a 23-4-2 record and earned the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament. Midfielder Dana Lewis was named Player of the Year in Illinois.

Loyola Academy defeated North Shore 4-2 in the quarterfinals. The Ramblers fell to New Trier 2-0 in the semifinals before rallying to win the third-place game over Oak Park-River Forest.

Boys Soccer: New Trier continued its improbable run through the playoffs with a 4-1 win over Maine East in the sectional championship on Saturday. Senior Andrew Cahill and sophomore Alex Underwood each had two goals in the victory.

After a rough regular season, the Trevians seem to be hitting their stride at the right time and have now won four straight games in the playoffs. The two days earlier. The match was called midway through the second half because of lightning storms in the area. Jeff Farina had the only goal of the game.

Girls Volleyball: New Trier won its own regional in the Class 4A playoffs on Thursday, defeating Niles North 25-11, 25-17 to advance to the sectional semifinals against Loyola Academy.

The Ramblers edged Niles West 25-22, 25-22 to take home the Skokie Regional championship.

New Trier and Loyola will play on Nov. 1 at Glenbrook South.

Football: In a repeat of its season-opener, Loyola shutout Evanston 35-0 to advance to the second round of the Class 8A playoffs. Malcolm Weaver was 22-for-29 passing for 300 yards and three touchdown passes in the victory.

The Ramblers go on the road and will face Dunbar at Gately Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

North Shore held on for a 28-24 win over Flanagan in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs on Saturday. It was the Raiders first playoff victory since 1999. Coach Jim Deuble won his 100th game at North Shore.

Boys Golf: North Shore won its first team state championship in school history with a three-shot victory over Bismarck-Henning. Junior Nick McCall led North Shore with a fifth-place finish individually.  

Boys Cross Country: New Trier’s Leland Later won the Class 3A Niles West Sectional and helped the Trevians take second place as a team to advance to the state championships in Peoria next weekend.

Later finished the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 34.30 seconds, a full 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Malachy Schrobilgen (14:44.44) from Oak Park-River Forest. New Trier (110 points) finished second to York (73).

Loyola Academy (153) took third place, also advancing as a team to the state finals. The Ramblers were led by senior Will Hague (14:57), who finished in fourth place. Senior Todd Ford (15:06) followed in fifth place.

Girls Cross Country: Behind individual champion Courtney Ackerman, New Trier (33 points) cruised to a sectional title and advanced to next week’s state championships. The Trevians finished well ahead of runner-up Glenbard West (83) and third-place York (96).

Ackerman finished in 17 minutes, 2.86 seconds while twin sister Jessica Ackerman took third (17:17) and Mimi Smith (17:31) finished in sixth.

North Shore junior Hanna Cunningham finished 42nd at the Class 1A Lisle Sectional cross country meet. Cunningham completed the 3.1-mile course in 22:02.
