Fall Playoffs Sports Roundup: NT Swimming Wins Sectional Title

Loyola football advanced to the semifinals while girls basketball starts its season this week.

Girls Swimming: Defending state champion New Trier ran away with the team title at the Glenbrook South Sectional on Saturday, accumulating 302 team points and four event victories. The Trevians beat out runner-up Loyola (256) and third-place Glenbrook South (213) among the 12 teams.

Caroline Grant won the diving competition with a score of 468.5 points and Anna Peterson took first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.68 seconds). The Trevians’ 200 freestyle relay (1:36.53) and 400 free relay (3:29.42) also took first, setting pool records at Glenbrook South.

In total, qualified two individuals in each event, plus one team for each relay, giving the Trevians the maximum number of entrants to the state meet.

Loyola has 15 individual entries into this weekend’s state championships and three relay teams. Senior Mallory Reick won the 200 individual medley (2:08.45) and senior Michelle Garland took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.81) at the sectional.

North Shore sophomore Juliette Corboy qualified for the diving competition with the third-highest sectional score (465.4), taking second to Grant at the Glenbrook South Sectional.

Football: Loyola advanced to the semifinals for the third season in a row with a dominating 33-10 victory over Lyons. QB Malcolm Weaver threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns and Will Palivos had 128 rushing yards and a score in the victory.

The Ramblers face off against Glenbard North on Saturday afternoon in Wilmette with Loyola looking for its first championship game appearance since 1993.

Basketball: Girls basketball tips off this week as New Trier goes on the road to Phillips on Wednesday and then visits Loyola Academy on Friday night.

The Trevians are No. 1 in our preseason basketball poll ranking both the boys and girls teams while Loyola Academy is No. 7.

Girls Volleyball: Five Trevians made the CSL South All-Conference team. Seniors Katie Fauntleroy, Kathryn Polkoff and Allison Van Horn, junior Brittani Steinberg, and sophomore Taylor Tashima were among 12 players who received the honor.

New Trier had the most players of any school on the all-conference team. Evanston’s Casey Durham won Player of the Year for the CSL South.

Extra Credit: Loyola’s Weaver and New Trier’s Grant are also nominees for Weaver’s teammate, Peter Pujals, won the award last week for his performance against Dunbar in the second round.
