New Trier Student Arrested, Suspected of Selling Pot Brownies

UPDATE, 3:17 p.m.: The 16-year-old male was arrested on campus during school hours Monday.

 A 16-year-old New Trier student was arrested Monday in connection to sales of brownies laced with marijuana following a joint investigation between New Trier staff and the police officer assigned to the school.

The student was arrested on campus during school hours. He was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and delivery of cannabis, said Sgt. Mark Hornstein of the Winnetka Police Department. His case was referred to juvenile court.

The district informed parents of the incident in an email Monday.

Dr. Linda Yonke, superintendant of New Trier District 203, wrote in the email that the school is assisting police with the investigation.

"The school also has taken firm disciplinary action against the student involved," Yonke wrote in the email.

The email also contained a warning to parents about the brownies:

 "Please be aware that drugs may be concealed in baked goods; ingesting marijuana or other drugs in this manner can have serious consequences. This incident presents an opportunity for the school and for parents to talk with our students about the legal, social, and health-related risks of drug or alcohol abuse, and we want to make sure that our students and parents understand the dangers of this type of drug use."
