This week marks New Trier High School's annual Spring Play, which takes a Japanese twist to the western Robin Hood tale in Find Hakamadare!
The play will be performed on May 9-10 at 7:30 p.m. and March 11 at 4:30 p.m. in the McGee Theatre at the of New Trier.
The play examines the effects of bravery after a cohort of villagers set out to find their hero, Hakamadare.
“Expectations of gender roles have been completely challenged for the students," said George Keating, guest director and Chicago actor. "For example, the female students are enacting warriors and leaders, and the male students are playing the ingénues and clowns."
New Trier Performing Arts Coordinator Anne James-Noonan said that the play chosen has been a physical demanding one for students. "Mr. Keating has incorporated elements of Eastern music, Eastern philosophy and Eastern discipline," she said. "This has been especially rewarding for our theatre students who study Kabuki and Noh theatre as a part of their theatre history studies unit.”
