Improved Winnetka Housing Market Keep School Enrollment Up

While the birth rate fell, enrollment has been increasing in District 36.

When the birth rate among Winnetka families went into decline between 2001 and 2009, District 36 assumed it would see fewer kindergarten students in the coming years.

But that has not played out.

Enrollment has actually increased in Winnetka public school kindergarten classes each year since 2011, according to board info.

District Data Consultant Phil Earvolino presented enrollment and demographic information to the board at its June meeting, explaining that the increase is due to more families moving into the district thanks to a stronger housing market.

Enrollment through the 2016-2017 school year is projected to be higher than previously expected. That could change, depending on whether “in-migration” into Winnetka stays high.

The district plans to continue to monitor both the village’s birth rate and home sales closely.
