Do you want to foster a Winnetka that is open, diverse and welcoming to all?
Register for the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs' free Fair Housing Advocate Training for Winnetka residents and workers. This training is perfect for Village staff, elected officials, or commission members; residents; business owners and employees; clergy and lay leaders; and staff or board members of local agencies. We are looking for 10-15 participants. You must live, work, go to school, or worship in Winnetka to participate.
The training series will take place over three consecutive Tuesday nights, on 10/30, 11/6, and 11/13, from 6:30-8:30 pm, at the Winnetka Congregational Church. This is underwritten by a fair housing education grant to Interfaith from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. We developed this training series in 2004 and have trained more than 100 people in 10 northern suburbs since then, including a Morton Grove trustee who later became the Village President and its Village Manager; the community development staff of Northbrook, Morton Grove, Evanston, and Wilmette; and additional trustees from Park Ridge and Winnetka. We've also had participants who are interested lay leaders, local teachers, and other residents. We just completed our training in July in Deerfield.
The first session is devoted to understanding the Fair Housing Act, including rights and responsibilities of all parties. The second session is about how to foster a diverse and inclusive community ("affirmatively furthering fair housing"). The third and last session is about programs and policies to promote affordable as well as fair housing, with time devoted to what you can do together to affect some aspect of fair or affordable housing in Winnetka. For example, as a result of the training in Park Ridge, the participants reconstituted their Fair Housing Commission and strengthened their local laws. Morton Grove created a fair housing brochure.
