Planning a Spring Break College Trip?

If you are beginning the college search process, you are probably thinking about visiting colleges.  Whether you stay close to home or venture further, there is much to think about when planning to visit colleges and universities.

Most colleges are in session when high schools are on spring break.  This is a great time to visit, as you will be able to see the campus “in action” and speak with students and faculty.  Colleges also host “visit days” during high school days off, such as Martin Luther King’s birthday, and President’s Day.

·      There are many schools within driving distance in and around the Chicago area.   Even if you don’t know if you will stay close to home, you can still get a good idea of the type of colleges you like before investing time and money to travel further.

·      Decide how much time you have and how long a drive you wish to make.

·      Keep an open mind:  visit at least one smaller, mid-size, and larger school.

·      Don’t visit more than two schools in a day.  (They tend to blend together, like looking for cars or homes.)

·      Always schedule a formal visit through the admissions office.  It is important that they have a record of you coming to campus.  (This is most often easily done through the school’s website.)

·      For those wishing to take a more extensive or out-of-the-area trip, look at a variety of schools in and around your travel destination, whether you are visiting family or taking a vacation.
