How Many Colleges Should You Apply To?
The question is more: to what types of colleges you should apply. Admission to a college can be unpredictable, especially at highly selective colleges. Though you may look good on paper, there are other factors colleges consider as they ‘build a class’. You should always apply to two colleges where you are at the high end of their average applications in GPA and test scores. One of those should be a ‘financial safety’ (a school your family can afford with little or no monetary aid).
At highly selective schools, essays, recommendations, leadership and accomplishments are among some of the many factors that play into the decision. In addition, ‘perceived interest’ is very important to many schools. And, you should only apply to colleges that you would be happy attending! Think about having a few safeties, a few ‘reach’ schools, and a few in that 50/50 category. Everyone is different.
