Winnetka to Consider Assault Weapon Ban

The village joins other North Shore communities that have passed or are considering their own bans.

Winnetka officials have been monitoring the gun issue and now will consider its own ban on assault weapons after the House and Senate voted to override Gov. Pat Quinn’s amendatory veto of concealed carry regulations, making Illinois the last state in the country to legalize concealed carry, Chicago Tribune reported.

Trustee Richard Kates said the village should give the public an opportunity to give input and that the issue of banning assault rifles is a serious question, but not all trustees felt the village should consider the ban--Trustees Jack Buck and Patrick Corrigan said the village should do nothing and leave gun legislation up to state and federal government, while Trustees Arthur Braun, Joe Adams and Stuart McCrary showed support for considering a new ordinance banning assault weapons, the newspaper reported.
