Winnetka Urges State Pension Reform

Village council voted June 19 to ask Governor Quinn and Illinois General Assembly to address unfunded pension liabilities; council warns without meaningful change the burden will continue to fall on taxpayers and negatively affect state's credit rating.

On June 19, the Winnetka Village Council voted unanimously to implore Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois General Assembly to make meaningful reform to the state pension program, according to the Village of Winnetka website

That approval came in the form of a letter to the governor that warns the state's credit rating will continue to take a beating as it deals with rising costs and outstand debt and bills, the letter from Village President Jessica B. Tucker states

"Please lead the State out of its fiscal crisis by immediately enacting global, comprehensive pension reform at all levels of government, for all current public employees and retirees," Tucker wrote.

Tucker asked in addition for the General Assembly to take politics, agendas and egos out of the equation, and instead urged state elected officals to work in the best interests of the citizens of Illinois.

The letter cites contributing issues such as benefits being approved without taking into account the effect they will have on property taxes or where the funding to support them will come from.
