Village Board Rebukes Carson’ Sign Violation

Police officers promoted and Deerfield Road work coming this week.

Carson’s got a strong rebuke from Mayor Harriet Rosenthal and the Village Board of Trustees Monday for replacing a sign in front of its restaurant on Waukegan Road in violation of Deerfield’s ordinance and ignoring the regulatory process.

After the Appearance Review Commission retroactively denied the request, the Board unanimously denied Carson’s appeal at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday. The crux of the issue was excessive language on the sign.

After Carson’s installed the sign, the Village sent letters On July 11 and again on August 14 asking it be removed. When the company failed to take action, the Appearance Review Commission ruled the sign was in violation of the ordinance on Sept. 24 and Carson’s appealed.

The sign advertises "Prime Steaks" which violates the ordinance because it refers to a specific type of food, according to Village Manager Kent Street.

In other news from the Board, Street said work would be done on Deerfield Road between Waukegan Road and the eastern Village limit between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for the next week reducing traffic to one lane in each direction some of the time.

“There will be rolling lane closures,” Street said. Cameras will be lowered into sewers to determine what work, if any, is necessary.

Earlier in the meeting, three members of the Police Department received promotions and were sworn into their new positions. Sgt. Bill Annen became a commander while officers Juan Mazariego and Chuck Horstein took the oath as sargeants.

Patch will have a more detailed story about the Carson’s sign controversy and a photo gallery of the police promotions later this week.

The sign is fine and the rules around signage are dumb. However, Carson's didn't follow the process and that makes me feel less bad for them then if they had and got rejected.

Congratulations Sgt. Juan Mazariego ... met you once or twice and each time you were wonderful and nice ... all police departments should have people like you! Ms. Kitty

I understand that Carson's initially didn't follow the proper approval procedure, but rejecting the sign because it refers to a specific kind of food is absolutely ridiculous.

I would hope that the board has better things to do than get on Carson's for it's signage.
