Monday Marks Deadline for Property Tax Appeals

Appeals for properties in New Trier Township are due on Aug. 8.

With recent floodwater creeping up and U.S. economy trickling down, it might be worth taking a second look at your property value assessment. But you have to act fast, as appeals are due on Monday for New Trier Township residents.

"More people are appealing their assessments than usual for an off year," said Lois Cross, the New Trier Township deputy assessor. An "off year" is when Cook County opts not to reassess property values in a township, and leaves them the same as the year prior.

Cross believes the uptick in applications is due to the struggling U.S. economy.

The deadline to submit an appeal for your property's assessment is Monday, Aug. 8 in New Trier Township.

Property owners can come into the assessor's office from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday with their appeals. After 12 p.m. on Monday, the township will deliver the files to the Skokie Courthouse, at which point residents should take them directly to the courthouse to submit.

The property assessment is Cook County's registered value on your home or business property. Your property tax is calculated according to this dollar value.

The New Trier Township Assessor's Office is located at 739 Elm St. in Winnetka. Cross suggests that owners call 847-446-8200 with questions.
