Election Day 2011: Voters Head to the Polls In Winnetka

At 11 a.m. Tuesday, Precinct 12 hit the 100 voter mark -- and a steady stream of voters filed in to cast ballots.

"I always vote," said Nancy Silberman, after she submitted her ballot. "I think it's important. I have my reasons and I always do it."

Four election judges sat at the Precinct 12 table, verifying signatures and passing out paper ballots and cards for touch-screen voting. For at least the fifth time, Tamara Dietrich-Muller was helping New Trier Township voters. She worked her first election as a college student during a semester she spent at home in the area.

"I said, 'what could I possibly do to serve others when I don't feel that productive?'" she said. "It's just one day but it's a long day."

For Maddie Glenn, being an election judge meant civic experience and a day away from school. The New Trier High School senior worked as an election judge for the first time as part of a U.S. history project and this is her third election as a judge.

"Most people [in the class] were deterred because we start so early [in the morning]," Glenn said.

Robert Leonard and Lonnie Barefield helped voters with the touch-screen machines and passed out paper ballots. As they left the church, Christine and John Yasenak said they wanted to vote for New Trier school board candidates.

"We have to vote. It's our civic duty," Christine said.

"And the school board is a big deal," John said.
