Winnetka Police Crack Down on Cell Phone Use While Driving

The Winnetka Police Department will join forces with the Highland Park, Lake Forest, Deerfield and Waukegan Police departments to conduct on-going education and enforcement concerning hand-held cell phone use while driving. The enforcement will be Mon. June 3 through Fri, June 7.

In addition to enforcing the respective hand-held cell phone use while driving restrictions in the aforementioned communities, each of the Police Departments will increase their enforcement of the Illinois State law that restricts use of a hand-held cell phone while driving in a school speed or construction zone.

Ten states currently have a restriction on all hand-held cell phone use while driving. Legislation is pending in Illinois to establish a similar law. The National Safety Council estimates that 1.3 million traffic crashes each year involve the use of a cell phone.

An additional joint enforcement and educational initiative will occur upon the beginning of the 2013-14 school year in August.
