Winnetka Police Blotter: $1,700 Loss in Internet Scam

A summary of incidents reported from July 5-10.

The Winnetka Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Theft

A skateboard left overnight on a driveway in the 300 block of Locust Street was reported missing on July 5. Described as a "LandYachtz Time machine Logboard Complete" with "Zombie Hawgs" black wheels, the skateboard is valued at $239.

A bicycle was reported missing on July 6 after it had been locked to a post at 878 Green Bay Rd. earlier that day. The bike is described as a white 15-speed girl's Schwinn Frontier model, with 26-inch wheels. The bike is valued at $369.

A bicycle was reported missing on July 6 after it had been left unlocked on a bike rack at 385 Winnetka Ave. earlier that day. The silver 21-speed boy's Giant Boulder model had 20-inch wheels and lacked a kickstand. The bike is valued at $324.

Burglary

The driver's side window of a car parked in the 1300 block of Oak Street was smashed and a purse removed on July 8. The purse contained the owner's wallet, driver's license, Social Security card, multiple credit cards and checks. In addition, a silver Apple iPod Nano and a Motorola Atrix mobile phone were taken. The loss is estimated at $670.

A tote bag containing several items was taken after the driver's side rear window was shattered on July 8 outside the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center at 530 Hibbard Rd. The stolen items include a black leather purse and sunglasses by Gucci as well as a wallet with several credit cards. A silver iPod Nano, a 10-inch Apple MacBook Pro laptop and a remote for the car were also missing. The loss is estimated at $2,300.

Internet Fraud

A woman reported on July 10 that she received an e-mail from a friend who was abroad and needed money immediately. She sent the money via Western Union but later realized her e-mail account had been hacked. The loss was reported at $1,700.

Domestic Battery

A 50-year-old Winnetka resident was arrested on July 10 on a charge of domestic battery. The arrest came as a result of a reported battery at the resident earlier.

Garage Burglary

Police took a report on July 10 in regards to a garage burglary that occurred in early May in the 900 block of Ash Street. A blue girl's Diamondback Vital 2 LX bicycle valued at $295 was taken from the unlocked garage.
