Winnetka Blotter: $10,000 Tea Set Heist, Bike Lost and Found

The following information was supplied by the Winnetka Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Attempted Burglary

A damaged front door in the 300 block of Sheridan Road was discovered by police after a burglar alarm was activated on June 22 at 3:01 p.m. Nothing was reported missing from the home and police were unable to determine if the offender(s) gained entry. 

Criminal Damage

A victim reported a four foot scratch on her vehicle June 21 at 7:15 p.m. in the 500 block of Chestnut Street. The damage was made to the driver's side door and rear panel, and the cost of the damages have not yet been determined.

Theft

A victim discovered his blue 19-inch Fuji Suntour boy's bicycle was missing from the 300 block of Winnetka Avenue June 18 at 12:14 p.m. The loss was estimated at $375, but the bicycle was later returned to the owner after being recovered. 

A 15-year-old male from New Trier Township was arrested for two counts of theft on June 19 at 2:48 p.m. Police were investigating the theft of the blue 19-inch Fuji Suntour boy's bicycle (mentioned above) and said they observed the juvenile taking a bicycle from a bike rack. He was taken into custody and referred to a peer jury.

A victim reported that some time between 5 p.m. June 17 and 4:30 p.m. June 21, an antique monogrammed 'Tiffany' sterling silver tea set was stolen from the residence in the 1000 block of Sunset Road. The amount of the loss is estimated at more than $10,000.

Traffic Arrest

Gelasio Ortega, 33, of the 6100 block of Rocoe, Chicago, was arrested for driving under the influence of alchol June 22 at 11:47 p.m. Ortega also was charged with driving on an expired license and using a handheld cell phone while doing so. His court date is scheduled for Aug. 1. 

David C. Magnuson, 49, of the 1000 block of Cherry Street, Winnetka, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on June 22 at 1:40 a.m. Magnuson also was charged with speeding and a court date is set for July 16. 

A 16-year-old boy from Chicago was arrested for driving without a valid driver's license on June 24 at 12:38 a.m. He also was charged with unlawful use of license plate covers and failure to dim headlights. His court date is scheduled for Aug. 1.
