Winnetka Man Killed in Fall While Hiking in Utah: Report

Search-and-rescue workers found the body of William Pierce about 400 feet below a difficult and dangerous hiking area, the Chicago Tribune reported.

A Winnetka man on a business trip in Utah fell to his death while hiking near a Salt Lake City ski resort late last week, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The body of William Pierce was found Friday, June 27, at the bottom of a snow chute, about 400 feet below what Salt Lake City authorities described as "a difficult hiking area," the Tribune reported. Police told the Tribune that this was the third major fall recently and the second fatal one for the scenic yet dangerous canyon area.

Police are treating the death as an accident and believe Pierce slipped and fell while hiking, the report stated.

A photo Pierce texted his wife of the area where he was hiking helped authorities and a helicopter search team find his body as quickly as they did, the report added.

"Where he was found, it probably would have been a long time until he was found," Hansen told the Tribune. "But because he texted his wife where he was, it gave us a pretty good place to start the search."
