Winnetka Blotter: Missing Briefcase Turns Up, Missing Handgun

A summary of incidents reported in Winnetka April 25-May 8.

The following items are taken from the Winnetka Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. Motor Vehicle Burglary: A man's briefcase was removed from his unlocked vehicle and found at his neighbor's driveway in the 400 block of Glendale the following day. Five dollars worth of coins were missing from the briefcase.

Assault: A man notified police after he was threatened by another man who was damaging street signs near the 500 block of Willow Road. Police questioned a suspect and the victim did not file a complaint.

May 7

Retail Theft: The manager of a store in the 500 block of Chestnut called police after a shopper took a shirt that cost $108 from the store. Video surveillance confirmed the report and Winnetka police located the suspect. The manager received restitution and the suspect was banned from the store.

 

May 6

Traffic Arrest: Joseph Eagle Jr., 55, of Chicago was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license and cited for failing to signal and driving without insurance. He was arrested at 12:34 p.m. at Greenwood and Tower. His court date is June 7.

 

May 5

Theft: A man notified police when he discovered a handgun missing from the trunk of his vehicle in the 600 block of Green Bay Road. The gun is a 22-calibur Taurus 94. The gun may have gone missing in the last two months.

Theft: A bike and bike lock was reported missing from the parkway of a residence in the 1000 block of Scott Avenue.

 

May 4

Traffic Arrest: Hugo Vergara-Castro, 23, of Chicago was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license and cited for driving without a seat belt and without valid insurance. His court date is June 14.

Traffic Arrest: A 17-year-old boy from Chicago was arrested on a charge of driving without a valid driver's license, failure to reduce speed and driving without insurance. His court date is June 14.

Fraud/Deception: A resident in the 1100 block of Cherry Street reported suspicious phone calls requesting a wire transfer to receive a sweepstakes prize he won. The victim wired the money the previous week. The amount of loss is $11,900. 

Theft: A bicycle was reported missing from a bike rack in the 1100 block of Chatfield. The amount of the loss is $350.

 

May 3

Traffic Arrest: Jose Alonson-Luna, 39, of Chicago was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended driver's license, failure to signal and driving without insurance. He was stopped at 12:12 p.m. at Walden and Westmoor. His court date is June 14.

Traffic Arrest: Jose Lemus, 33, of Summitt, Ill., was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license and cited for impeding traffic. He was stopped 7:38 p.m. in the 300 block of Provident Avenue. His court date is June 22. Lemus was also processed and released on bond for a warrant from Dupage County.

 

May 2

Identity Theft: A man reported suspicious activity on his bank account, including an attempted wire transfer.

 

April 27

Burglary - Motor Vehicle: A woman in the 1100 block of Cherry Street called police after a canvas bag was stolen out of her car's trunk, which was left open in her driveway. The bag had painting supplies and a digital camera. The amount of the loss is $550.

 

April 25

Disorderly Conduct: A caller notified police after she saw a man who was allegedly fondling himself in a restaurant in the 800 block of Green Bay Road.
