Winnetka Blotter: Air Rifle Menace Arrested; Thefts

A summary of incidents reported to police June 21-25.

The Winnetka Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please e-mail the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

12-year-old Arrested

Police arrested a 12-year-old boy after he allegedly pointed an air rifle at people walking near Elm Street and Provident Avenue on June 21 at 7:50 p.m. Police responded and apprehended the juvenile, who was referred to the Peer Jury program.

Burglary

A Sony 32-inch television and a blue “Desley” suitcase were taken from a residence in the 900 block of Tower Road on June 22. The items, valued at $400, were discovered missing after the resident found an unsecured rear door was used to gain entry earlier in the day.

Theft

Scrap metal was taken from a trash bin in the rear of a building at 510 Green Bay Rd. A construction foreman reported the theft on June 21, telling police that two additional thefts had occurred over the previous two weeks. The loss was estimated at $1,500.

A purple Trek T900 bike was taken from a rack on June 23 at 385 Winnetka Ave. Its owner reported that the unlocked bike was valued at $200.

An iPhone SIM card and $140 were stolen from a backpack stowed in a locker at 385 Winnetka Ave. on June 23. The items were valued at $170.

A silver Specialized Sirrus US Sport bike was stolen on June 24 at 568 Green Bay Rd. The women’s 21-speed bike, valued at $800, had been locked to a street sign with a cable lock.

Drug, Traffic Violations

Bretton Scheller, 21, of Winnetka, was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a car without an updated registration or insurance on June 25. The arrest came after a traffic stop by the police at the corner of Hibbard Road and Winnetka Avenue. Scheller’s court date is Aug. 11.
