Suburban Identity Theft Traced to Northfield

The following information was reported by Northfield Police. Where arrests are included, it does not indicate a conviction.

Identity Theft
On Aug. 29, officers received a call from Glen Ellyn police reporting a Glen Ellyn woman whose car was burglarized and checkbook stolen, according to police. The woman then noticed one of her checks had been cashed at a Chase bank in Northfield, according to the report.

Officers spoke to a teller and manager at the bank, who said a woman used the drive-thru teller on Aug. 22 to cash a check using the Glen Ellyn victim's ID, debit card and check, police say. The bank became suspicious when the woman in the drive-thru tried to cash someone else's check, at which point she became nervous and drove away leaving the ID and debit card at the bank, according to the report. Police say the bank did not previously notify officers of this incident.

Surveillance caught the driver's license plates, which matched a car that was reported stolen out of Steger, IL, according to police.

Vehicular Burglary
On Aug. 31, someone at the Sunset Ridge Country Club reported a vehicle had its passenger side window smashed, according to police. Officers found the vehicle's owner, who reported a purse was stolen, police say. The vehicle was parked in a lot east of the club's main building, in an area which is not monitored by surveillance, according to police.

Suspicious Person
On Aug. 28, someone reported a man in his 40s trying to open car doors in an underground parking lot of an office plaza on the 500 block of Frontage Road, according to police. When the man was approached, he said he did not need help and wasn't from the area, according to the report. Officers searched the area, but could not find the man, police say.

Handicap Placard Confiscated
On Aug. 29, officers issued a citation to Shiela R. Goldberg of Winnetka for using her husband's handicap parking placard without him present, according to police. The placard was confiscated until Goldberg paid a fine, police say.

DUI
On Sept. 2, officers stopped Melissa M. Wellens, 32, of Aurora, for speeding on Willow Road, according to police. She was charged with DUI, driving with a suspended license and driving with no insurance, police say.
