Updated: Over 20 Cases of Fraud Linked to Treasure Island in Wilmette

The Wilmette Police Department is investigating 22 cases of identity theft, all citing the local Treasure Island grocery store located at 911 Ridge Rd. as the suspected point of theft, according to police reports. 

Out of the 22 cases, nine reported that their card numbers had been fraudulently used in Texas. 

The 22 incidents occurred between March 1 and April 14, the reports state.

Seven more cases of Fraud with the Wilmette Treasure Island as the suspected point of theft have been reported to the Wilmette Police Department, putting the number of identity theft cases linked to the grocery store at 22.

One of the incidents occurred on April 14, one occurred on April 9, another on April 5, one on April 6 and another occurred between March 21 and April 13, police reports state. An incident also occurred on April 1 and another on March 18.

Three of the cards had been used in Texas, much like some of the previous cases. The other cards were used in Missouri, Wisconsin and Chicago.

Seven other incidents of credit card fraud occurred in Wilmette last week — with two citing suspicious charges in Texas — although they have not been directly linked to the Treasure Island grocery store.

The cases of indentity theft are now being primarily investigated by the Secret Service, as the incidents cross state lines (There are reports of the stolen numbers being used in Texas, Indiana and New York.) and because Treasure Island is a corporation.

"Treasure Island is the path that is being investigated by the Secret Service," Wilmette Police Commander Patrick Collins said. "All we know is that ... the Secret Service said that there was a compromise to the Treasure Island computer service."

He explained that the Secret Service has now taken over the case, although the Wilmette Police Department is still taking reports and assisting residents with documenting the fraud for insurance and bank purposes. 

"We've sent out a crime alert asking people to check their credit card accounts and report if they notice any unauthorized charges," he said. "Most businesses and banks want to see some sort of police documentation."
