Northfield Police Blotter: Smoldering Fire Put Out at School

A summary of events filed from Aug. 2-5.

The Northfield Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please e-mail the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

The Northfield Police Department fielded a total of 109 calls from Aug. 2-9.

Aug. 2

Criminal defacement: A resident on Hibbard Road called police to complain that a fence along the road was defaced with graffiti and random writing. The case is under investigation.

Driving under the influence of alcohol: Police stopped a Northfield woman at Northfield Road and Winnetka Avenue when they noticed  a large section of her splashguard on the pavement behind her. As she continued to drive southbound in the northbound lane, the car lost its front bumper. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver's blood alcohol content level registered .139. The driver was charged with improper lane usage, driving on a suspended license and driving under the influence. She was given a $3,000 bond, and a court date on Aug. 22.

Aug. 3

Hit and run: A Glenview driver was westbound on Willow and Waukegan roads when he was rear-ended waiting at the stoplight. The offender signaled for the man to pull over but then sped away. Police later found the driver, a 60-year-old Glencoe man, who was charged with failure to reduce speed, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to give information and aid after an accident, and failure to report an accident. His court date is Aug. 22.

Theft under $500: A 17-year-old Northfield boy parked his bicycle with other bikes outside the Shell gasoline station at 469 Sunset Ridge Rd. When he came out, his bike was gone. Police think an acquaintance took it in error but are investigating.

Aug. 4

Vandalism: A mailbox was knocked off its stand in the 800 block of North Happ Road overnight. There was no damage estimate provided in the report.

Fire: Employees at Middlefork School, 405 Wagner Rd., reported an odor of something burning. The police and fire departments found smoldering ashes falling from the ceiling of the boiler room.

The previous day, a company was installing an air conditioner, and two welders had been working in the room. The boiler room, an adjacent classroom and an area of the roof were affected.

There was no damage estimate available at press time.

Aug. 5

Trespass: While an appraiser was trying to complete a broker price estimate at a home for sale in the 500 block of Valley Way, he noticed an open sliding glass door. He contacted the police, who then searched the area and notified the owner to secure the building.
