Northfield Police Blotter: Battery, Burglary, Theft, Harassment

A summary of events from April 27 to May 2.

The following items are taken from the Northfield Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please e-mail the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

April 26

Burglary: A resident reported that, walking by her second home in the 300 block of Lagoon Drive, she noticed that the door had been pried open. The home was under renovation, and power tools valued at $1600 were missing.

April 27

Identity theft: A Northfield man reported that his credit card had been used for charges at a store in Missouri. Police advised him to cancel the card.

April 28

Driving under the influence: Police stopped Peter A. Hellstrom, 45, of Winnetka for speeding while he had been traveling east in the 1600 block of Willow Road around 11:30 p.m. Officers found him to be intoxicated and arrested him. He was released on a $1,000 bond.

April 29

No valid driver's license: Police arrested Marianna Apantenco of Chicago on Willow Road for driving without a valid license. She was released on bond.

April 30

Suspicion: A resident called around 9:35 a.m. to report that he had received a telephone call from someone claiming to be Publisher's Clearing House. The person told him he had won $12 million and that he needed to send $285 to the caller via Western Union.

Harassment by text: A concerned mother complained to the police department  around 12:30 p.m. that one of her daughter's friends may have put the daughter's phone number on Craiglist in a sexually explicit advertisement. The girl is now is receiving calls/texts on the phone from adults.

Theft: Three 15-year-old boys stole two skateboards that were in front of Dominicks around 10:18 p.m. Police caught up with them, detained them and released them to their parents.

May 2

Theft: The Episcopal Church of St. James, in the 500 block of Sunset Ridge Road, reported around 9:35 a.m. that $1,800 in cash and checks had gone missing from a wine-tasting fundraiser held at the church.

Theft: A woman reported that she was missing a Rolex watch around 1:45 p.m. She said it had been  left out in the open while she was having some wore done at her house.

Deceptive practices: A man reported to police around 1:50 p.m. that a company in Kansas City, Mo., had tricked him with a job offer. He had contracted with them to do mystery shopping, but when he received an $896 money order as payment, it turned out to be fraudulent.

Domestic battery: A Northfield brother and sister got into an altercation that ended  with the brother, Timothy A. Stahl, being arrested around 3:45 p.m. As of press time, he was receiving a bond hearing.
