Northfield Blotter: Resisting Arrest, Shoplifting Coffee and Booze, Driving Drunk While Using iPhone

A recap of incidents reported to police in Northfield from Dec 7-14.

The following items are taken from Northfield Police Department reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Dec. 12

Domestic Dispute: A child in the 200 block of Riverside Drive called 9-1-1 at 8 p.m. and told police her mother was threatening to break her Nintendo with a hammer. An officer responded but found the argument to be verbal only. Peace was restored and a social service request form was submitted.

Suspended Driver's License: A Rockford woman, 23, was pulled over in the 500 block of Sunset Ridge Rd. at 12:30 a.m. for having only one working headlight. Police discovered she had a suspended license, no valid insurance and an arrest warrant out of Kane County related to a DUI charge. She posted $1,500 bail and is due in court in Kane County on Jan. 7.

Retail Theft: A Dominick's store manager called police at 3:36 p.m. when he saw two Wilmette men shoplifting alcohol. Store security stopped one of the men while a Northfield police officer chased the other into the parking lot. The officer caught the suspect after he fell into a grass embankment covered in snow. As the suspect was being handcuffed, an $82.89 bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rosé Champagne fell out of his jacket. He had also taken a $30.99 bottle of Belvedere Vodka. The suspect, 20, was charged with retail theft, possession of alcohol by a minor and resisting a peace officer. The second suspect, 19, was charged with retail theft and possession of cannabis. Both men were released on $1,000 I-bonds and are due to appear in court on Jan. 11. A third man was found in the back seat of the shoplifters' vehicle, but he claimed no involvement and was sent on his way.

DUI Alcohol: A Glenview man, 28, was driving northbound in the 300 block of Waukegan Rd. around 7:20 p.m. while changing a song on his iPhone when he smashed into the back end of another car. Police detected a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath and ordered him to take a field sobriety test, which he failed. He struggled while the officer handcuffed him, according to the police report. The man was cited for following too closely to another vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, having a blood alcohol content of 0.341, and using an electronic device while driving. The 54-year-old woman driving the other car claimed she was injured but did not go the hospital. Both vehicles were totaled.

 

Dec. 8

Retail Theft: At 11:56 a.m. two men stole more than $350 worth of Taster's Choice coffee from Dominick's on 1822 Willow Rd. The store discovered the theft two hours later after noticing several coffee cans missing and reviewing the security camera, which revealed the men had put 15 large and 20 small cans under their clothes. The the theft is under investigation.
