Glencoe Blotter: Stolen Purse Recovered; Car Damaged in Golf Course Burglary

A summary of crimes reported in Glencoe from July 7-13.

The Glencoe Public Safety Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please email the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

July 14

Driving Without a License — Jovany Diaz-Gantes, 27, of Highland Park, was arrested on charges of driving without a license after his 2003 Chevy Tahoe was stopped at 11:33 p.m. on Green Bay Road. Diaz-Gantes was pulled over for allegedly making several lane violations, with police suspecting he was driving drunk, which proved unfounded. His court is set for Aug. 11.

Missing Animal – Ziggy, a male black Labrador retriever, went missing at 3:52 p.m. from the 1000 block of Meadow Road.

July 12

Juvenile Nuisance – A bonfire was reported at the beach at 10:32 p.m. in the 400 block of Lakeside Terrace, but the fire was out when police arrived.

July 11

Burglary — A report of a car break-in at the Autohaus in the 1600 block of Frontage Road was reported at 1:29 p.m. Between 2:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. July 6, an unlocked white 2010 Mercedes ML320 was broken into and a briefcase along with a planner, miscellaneous papers and $15 cash were stolen. The car belonged to an employee.

Downed Branches — Tree limbs fell during the storm, blocking the 400 block of Adams Avenue at 9:59 a.m. and the 500 block of Greenwood Avenue at 10:04 a.m.

Domestic Battery — A 41-year-old Glencoe man was arrested on charges of domestic battery at 12:26 a.m. in the 100 block of Wentworth Avenue. His court date is July 18.

July 10

Trespassing — Stephanie A. Smith, 19, and Johnny L. Salgado, 24, both of Wheeling, were cited at 4:55 a.m. on charges of trespassing at Dell Beach near the corner of Dell Place and Lakeside Terrace. Smith was also cited on a charge of underage consumption of alcohol. Police saw the two standing on a private pier, next to two bottles of Sierra Nevada beer and a bottle of Smirnoff vodka lay beside them.

Driving with a Suspended License — Chaplin A. Tarshis, 35, of Glencoe, was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended license and failure to signal at 9:06 p.m. at the corner of Temple Court and Vernon Avenue. Police said Tarshis was stopped in a red 1992 Honda Accord station wagon for failing to signal that he was turning left onto Park Avenue from Village Court. It was discovered that his license had been revoked. His court date is Aug. 11.

July 9

Burglary — A $2,800 Dacor cooktop was reported stolen at 5 p.m. from a house under renovation in the 1100 block of Hohlfelder Road. The theft occurred between 8 a.m. July 2 and 8 a.m. July 5. The owner thought the front doors may have been left unlocked over the Fourth of July holiday. There were no signs of forced entry.

A Coach purse was stolen from a red 1992 Honda Accord while it was parked in front of the 7-Eleven in the 100 block of Green Bay Road at 4:55 p.m. The windows of the car had been left open while the owner was in the convenience store. The $300 purse was found at 10:16 p.m. across the street in a driveway with all of its contents.

Littering — Robert M. Caplin, 51, of Glencoe, was cited on charges of littering at 10:42 a.m. in the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue. A witness reportedly saw Caplin toss a small bag of trash out the window of his black SUV and onto a lawn at 10:35 a.m.

July 8

Lost Item — A house key with a squid key chain was reported missing from the downtown area at the corner of Park and Vernon avenues at 4:58 p.m.

Fireworks — Illegal fireworks were heard at 10:08 p.m. in the first block of Crescent Drive.

July 7

Burglary — A flash drive for computer files was reported stolen from an unlocked Ford Explorer at 5:36 p.m. in the 100 block of Glenwood Avenue. The theft may have occurred between 8 a.m. July 3 and 8:30 a.m. July 7. The owner of the car noticed the item missing when he went to wash the SUV.

A blue 2011 Hyundai Tucson sustained a smashed window during a burglary at the Lake Shore Country Club at 7:31 p.m. in the 1200 block of Sheridan Road. A backpack, which contained a Hewlett-Packard laptop computer, a Kindle electronic book and an Hewlett-Packard calculator, was stolen during the incident that occurred between 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The value of the missing items was $900, and the car suffered $250 in damage.

Trespassing — A group of teenage boys, ages 16 to 17, from Northbrook were cited for trespassing at Dell Beach at 8:12 p.m. near the corner of Dell Place and Lakeside Terrace.

Suspected Theft — A side gate of a fence was reported stolen at 11:58 a.m. in the 500 block of Grove Street, but it turned out a repairman had removed the gate and forgot to replace it.

Juvenile Nuisance — A group of teenagers were found in a vacant house at 5:14 p.m. in the 500 block of Longwood Avenue.
