Glencoe Blotter: Knife-Wielding Man Arrested for Assault, Propane Pumpkin and One Bad Bat

Summary of police reports from Oct. 12 to Oct. 19.

The  provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Oct. 12

Theft — A Glencoe woman reported that, between 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 and 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, items and money from her 2003 Honda CR-V had been stolen. Among the items taken from her car, which she parked at her home in the 100 block of Linden Avenue, were a Generation-3 iPhone, its $20 ear-buds and $3 cash.

Road Rage — After being cut off on Green Bay Road by a 16-year-old boy in a blue Chevy Traverse, a man reported the teenager to Glencoe police. He told police that the teenager tailgated him, continued to speed up then passed him by driving over the shoulder and onto the grass.

As the teenager passed, he and his friend in the passenger seat made obscene gestures at the man, who later said he was driving the speed limit. The man chose not provide his home address nor sign complaints against the teenager, said Alan Kebby, deputy chief for the Glencoe Public Safety Department.

Oct. 16

Bat Day? — Halloween came early for a Glencoe woman living in the 200 block of Mary Street, when she reported at 7:30 p.m. that bat was flapping around the inside of her home.

Though the fate of the nocturnal intruder is unknown, people often smack or wrap bats in towels then turn them over to animal control for a rabies test, Kebby said. Bats are the number one carrier of the virus, he added.

Oct. 18

Propane Jack-O'-Lantern — Trick or treat — or explode and catch on fire? Though the former is always preferred, the latter likely crossed the mind of a Glencoe police officer, who found a propane tank cut open, decorated like a jack-o'-lantern and set in front of a home in the 700 block of Vernon Avenue.

Upon further inspection, the officer noticed the tank had been rinsed clean and a candle placed in the center. The jack-o'-lantern will stick around for Halloween, after the officer deemed it safe.

DUI and Assault Against Officer — Two male residents of Lake Forest were arrested at the intersection of Green Bay Road and Turnbull Woods Court, shortly after a Glencoe Public Safety Department ambulance found their car disabled by the side of the road late at night. Police were immediately called to the scene and arrived to find the 31-year-old driver allegedly intoxicated. He was soon arrested for DUI.

Outraged by the arrest, police said the driver's intoxicated friend, 30, who was sitting in the passenger seat, reached for his hunting knife, wedged between the driver's seat and armrest. The 30-year-old friend, a U.S. Marine who recently served two tours of duty in the Middle East, shouted at the officers on the scene: “I have something to say to you — F *** you!”

“If you get any closer,” he threatened, according to police, “I'm going to f***ing knock you out!”

According to police procedure, Glencoe police persuaded the U.S. Marine at gunpoint, Kebby speculated, to leave the knife in its sheaf. The 30-year-old man obeyed, and police arrested him for assault, obstructing a police officer and unlawful use of a weapon. He posted a $1,000 bond with a court date scheduled for Oct. 8.

The 31-year-old driver, who police are still investigating, posted a $3,000 bond. The judge set his court date for Dec. 8.
