Glencoe Blotter: Car Burglaries at Country Club; Drugstore Worker Charged in Theft

A summary of crimes reported in Glencoe from May 12-18.

The following items are taken from the Glencoe Public Safety Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Please e-mail the editor with any questions or to provide proof of expungement.

May 18

Burglary — The driver's side window on a 2011 Mercedes G1550 SUV was smashed and $140 in cash and an iPhone worth $400 were stolen between 1 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. The car was parked at the Skokie Country Club in the 500 block of Washington Avenue. The location was the scene of seven similar vehicular burglaries on May 12. For more information on this story,

Marijuana Possession — A man was caught smoking marijuana on his birthday at 3:19 a.m. in the 600 block of Greenwood Avenue. Police said loud music was coming out of his car and when the officer approached it, he could smell the odor of marijuana smoke. The officer asked the man if he had been smoking. The man said yes and that it was his birthday. He was cited for possession of marijuana and a pipe was confiscated.

Driving Under the Influence — David L. Rubens, 69, of Glencoe, was arrested on charges of driving without headlights and driving under the influence of alcohol at 8:36 p.m. at the corner of Green Bay Road and South Avenue. Police said his blood alcohol content registered at .125 percent.

Police stopped Rubens' black 2008 Honda Accord after he was seen driving in the dark without using the headlights. After he was pulled over, police said the officer could smell the odor of alcohol on Ruben, whose court date is June 7.

May 16

Theft — A man set a bag on the hood of his car at 9:32 a.m. in the 600 block of Vernon Avenue. He walked away and when he returned, the bag containing $60 and his driver's license was gone. Another man said he saw children flee with the bag.

Bike Theft -- A bicycle was reported stolen at 7:14 p.m. at the Glencoe Train Station in the 700 block of Old Green Bay Road.

May 15

Theft — A $4,300 necklace was stolen at a party at Am Shalom in the 800 block of Vernon Avenue on May 14. But a report was not filed until May 15. The necklace was recovered after it was returned through the mail on May 17.

May 13

Stolen Car — Fields Infiniti reported at 1:45 p.m. that a customer sold the dealership a stolen car in July 2010. The business subsequently sold the vehicle to a dealer down South, who found that the car had multiple vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and returned it to Fields.

Glencoe Public Safety ran the different VINs and found one vehicle had been reported stolen in June 2010. Glencoe authorities are working with Illinois State Police on the investigation.

Retail Theft — Brian J. Barry, 38, of Woodridge, was arrested on a charge of retail theft at 7:14 p.m. at Parkway Drugs in the 300 block of Park Avenue. Barry, a store employee, allegedly stole a bottle of Valium pills valued at $147 from the pharmacy.

Police said Barry showed them that he had hid the drugs under the garbage can behind the store. His court date is June 21.

Suspicious Person — An elderly man reported at 10:43 p.m. that he heard someone walking on his roof in the 700 block of Apple Tree Lane and then saw a man in dark clothing walking quickly away across the grass.

May 12

Burglary — Seven cars were burglarized at the Skokie Country Club in the 500 block of Washington Avenue between 7:50 p.m. and 9:23 p.m. All of the cars had a side window broken out and items were taken:

A bag with a computer was stolen from a 2009 Nissan Maxima. The total value of the items was $1,600.

A briefcase, an iPad and a Mac laptop were stolen from a 2009 Jaguar. The briefcase was worth $300, the iPad was worth $600 and the MacBook was worth $2,000.

A $250 Tumi canvas bag was stolen from a 2008 Volvo S40.

A $300 Tumi briefcase, a black wallet and a $400 iPad were stolen from a black 2006 BNW coupe.

A $300 black canvas Tumi briefcase was stolen from a silver 2003 Audi sedan.

A $500 Coach briefcase, a $400 laptop and a $50 leather portfolio were stolen from a 2006 Audi A4 convertible.

A silver 2007 Audi A4 sedan was broken into, but nothing was taken.

Defacement — Gang signs were drawn on the north and south sides of a building behind Glencoe Coffee Roast in the 700 block of Vernon Avenue. The signs read “4CH” for Four-Corner Hustler.

Suspicious Incident — A suspicious glass jar with liquid and tin foil was found sitting near the end of a driveway in the 800 block of Bluff Street.
