Fire Chief Smith to Retire in November

Winnetka Fire Chief Scott Smith will retire in November after 33 years with the department.

Winnetka Fire Chief Scott T. Smith will retire in November after a 33-year career with the Winnetka Fire Department, according to Deputy Fire Chief Steve Laureys. Smith, 56, has been the fire chief for six years.

"He's not only a fine fire executive, but he's also a wonderful, compassionate human being," Village Trustee Linda Pedian said.

Smith plans to officially retire on November 12, Laureys said. Human resources is receiving and reviewing applications for his replacement, and an interim fire chief will take over until a new chief is selected. The new village manager will be hired in time to finalize this decision, according to Pedian.

"Chief Smith will be very involved with the selection process," Pedian said. "The new village manager will then be fully responsible for hiring the new chief."

Laureys has known Smith since he began his career with the Winnetka Fire Department almost 28 years ago.

"At this point, we're more family than friends," said Laureys, referring to his family's relationship with Smith and his family. "I'm happy for him and his future retirement."

Pedian added, "He cares so much about the character and connectivity of his Winnetka team, and it's been a privilege to work beside him."
