Crime Alert: 2 Winnetka Homes Burglarized

Winnetka police issued a crime prevention alert following the incidents.

Two recent residential burglaries in Winnetka prompted police to alert the community to the incidents and offer prevention tips.

The burglaries occurred during the day, and electronics and jewelry appear to be the primary items stolen, according to an alert from Winnetka police. The burglarized homes are in the northwest area of the village and "some level of force was used to gain entry," the alert says.

The complete text of the alert is below.

● Incident

Two single family homes located in the northwest area of the village
recently experienced residential burglaries. Both burglaries occurred during
daytime hours when the homes were unoccupied for a brief period of time.
In both cases, some level of force was used to gain entry. Once inside, the
burglar(s) targeted jewelry and electronics.

● Recommendations

Communicate with your neighbors and watch out for each other especially
if you know your neighbors are away. Be cognizant of vehicles parked in
front of a neighbor’s house that are unfamiliar. Always keep doors and
windows locked; use the deadbolt, utilize your alarm system if so equipped.
Secure valuables, such as jewelry, in a bank safe deposit box.

Report any suspicious activity/persons/vehicles to the Winnetka Police
Department immediately at 847-501-6034. If you believe a crime is being
committed dial 911. In the past, burglars have posed as contractors or
workmen and parked their vehicles nearby. Do not take suspicious sounds
or people for granted. PLEASE HELP US PROTECT YOUR HOME AND
APPREHEND THE OFFENDERS—DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT
DAY TO CALL.

● Security Survey

The Winnetka Police Department Crime Prevention Unit offers free security
surveys. Upon request, an officer will conduct a survey of your
home/property and make recommendations on how you can make your
home more secure and reduce the opportunity of becoming the victim of a
