‘Our Grief Cuts Us to the Heart’

A memorial service was held for the New Trier teen and her friend who were killed in January while walking along a road near their upstate New York college.

New Trier graduate Sarah McCausland, 19, and her friend, 20-year-old Evelina Brown, of Seattle, were remembered this week at a memorial service at Bard College.

The two were struck by a car and killed while walking near the school in January. Prosecutors say the driver, who initially left the scene, had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.

McCausland’s parents, Sandra and Andy McCausland of Winnetka, attended the service, which combined remembrances, poetry and music, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

"This is just an incredibly beautiful tribute to these girls," Andy McCausland told the Poughkeepsie Journal. "You find in a moment like this ... our grief cuts us to the heart and we are so sad and so angry, but we do have hope.”
